Yogash chitta vritti nirodhah: Yoga is the cessation of mind stuff. Yoga Sutra 1:2 Patanjali
After twenty years of devoted practice Janelle Railey is at a place in her yogic journey where the subtleties of the mind/body connection come alive in her teaching. She engages her students in a deep exploration of yogic philosophy, meditation, pranayama and asana practice, while also inquiring about the relevance of the “on the mat” practice in the “off the mat” lives of individual practitioners. Her interest in teaching others comes from the Mahayana Buddhist and Bhakti Yoga lineages - the development of true compassion.
She has studied with many different teachers over these years and has witnessed issues of mind, body and spirit resolved through the eight-limb practice of Raja Yoga. Her training includes certification in the Kripalu tradition as well as in-depth study with Richard Freeman in the Ashtanga tradition. Janelle has also studied with many other master teachers and has traveled to India to study yoga and meditation. She feels, however, that the truest teacher is the practice itself.
Her classes are inspired by her devoted contemplation of what it means to genuinely experience life through the body. They are dynamic classes designed to awaken curiosity and assist all levels of practitioner in deepening a connection to their bodies and minds. She makes yoga both accessible and non-intimidating and is always open to allowing her classes to organically unfold to meet the needs of her students. Janelle is a licensed psychotherapist and is actively engaged in research surrounding the integration of classical Yoga and Buddhist meditation with modern psychology.
